“Plastics Recycling Show” cancelled following Brussels attacks / Second time terror forces event to be abandoned / Belgian capital on lockdown
Following this morning’s explosion at Brussels’ Zaventem airport and the blast that occurred at the underground station in the Belgian capital, the authorities have placed the country on the highest level of terror alert. The events have resulted in the renewed cancellation of the “Plastics Recycling Show” (PRSE, www.prseventeurope.com), which was due to begin this morning. Speaking to Plasteurope.com, Alexandre Dangis, head of European Plastics Converters (EuPC, Brussels / Belgium; www.plasticsconverters.eu) and Polymer Comply Europe, confirmed the decision to cancel the event, and co-organiser Crain Communications (UK) (www.crain.com) added that, “Due to serious events that took place in Brussels this morning, the organisers of the PRSE show have had no other option but to cancel the show.”
This is not the first time the European plastics recycling segment has been forced to deal with the terror threat head-on. Last year’s terror attacks in France and the subsequent high alert in the Belgian capital had led to the postponement of PRSE, which was originally due to be held in November 2015 (see Plasteurope.com of 10.12.2015).
All operations at Brussels Airport have been shut down for the day, and flights have been cancelled, after this morning’s blasts left several people dead or injured. Anyone worried about family or friends in the Belgian capital can call a special hotline to get more information: +32 2 753 7300. Since the mobile phone network in the city has come to a virtual standstill, the country’s authorities recommend that people use social networks to reach out to one another. Following the attacks, airports across Europe have been placed on high alert.
Questions concerning PRSE can be addressed either to Matt Barber (mabarber@crain.com), responsible for exhibitors, or to Alan Caddick (acaddick@crain.com), in charge of visitors.
