SGL / MITSUBISHI RAYON
Joint venture for the production of carbon fibre precursors
It is official. The SGL Group (Wiesbaden / Germany; www.sglcarbon.com) and Mitsubishi Rayon (MRC, Tokyo / Japan; www.mrc.co.jp) have announced that their joint venture for the manufacture of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based precursor fibres for the manufacture of carbon fibres has now become a reality – for previous coverage see Plasteurope.com of 09.04.2010.

The new MRC – SGL Precursor (MSP, Tokyo / Japan), of which MRC controls two thirds and SGL the remainder, will meet the precursor needs of SGL Automotive Fibres (Moses Lake, Washington / USA). The jv will begin production at its plant in Otake / Japan in April 2011, with most carbon fibres destined for BMW’s new “Megacity Vehicle”.
