Once the first building phase has been completed, SGL Automotive Fibers’ (Moses Lake, Washington / USA) new carbon fibre manufacturing plant will have an estimated capacity of 3,000 t/y. The 51:49 joint venture between the SLG Group (Wiesbaden / Germany; www.slgcarbon.com) and BMW (Munich / Germany; www.bmwgroup.com) is spending about USD 100m on the project, scheduled to begin operations in the third quarter of 2011 – see Plasteurope.com of 02.11.2009.
The jv initially will process polyacrylonitrile fibres produced by another recently established joint venture between SGL and Mitsubishi Rayon (MRC, Tokyo / Japan; www.mrc.co.jp). The finished carbon fibres will be transported to Germany, where they will be processed into fabric structures at a plant yet to be established. The ultimate aim is to produce components for BMW’s electric “Megacity Vehicle”, set to come off the production lines of the car manufacturer’s Landshut facility in 2015.
