Flexibles plant in Scotland to close / No production since September fire / 77 jobs lost
Amcor Flexibles Europe & Americas (Workington / UK; www.amcor.com) has announced its intention to close the plant in Livingston / Scotland that was seriously damaged by fire in September – see Plasteurope.com of 23.09.2010. A consultation process has started with the factory’s 77 workers.
Since the fire, no production has taken place at the site, which was damaged beyond repair. Previously it had manufactured flexible packaging for the snacks and confectionery markets. Continuity of supply to customers has been maintained by using output from the company’s other eight sites in the UK.
“Following thorough investigations and reviewing all available options, Amcor concluded it is not viable to reinstate the plant,” said Gérard Blatrix, vice president snacks & confectionery, Amcor Flexibles Europe & Americas. “It is with regret that we announce our intention to shut AF Livingston.” Customer volumes will be transferred permanently to other sites, Blatrix added, with the company committed to moving forward with care. Workers losing their jobs will be considered for employment at other Amcor locations.
Amcor Flexibles Europe & Americas, a division of Amcor (Abbotsford / Australia; www.amcor.com), is the world’s largest supplier of flexible packaging with 74 plants in 23 countries.
