A straw will show which way the wind blows, and it seems to be changing course for paper drinking straws at Capri-Sun – at least in Switzerland. The inventor of the drinks pouch wants to go back to the tried-and-true sippers made from recyclable plastics.

Many customers find the paper straws that go soft after use to be irritating, Capri-Sun boss Roland Weening is quoted as saying in Swiss media. Consumers are applauding the proposition on social media, calling on the company not to limit the good deed to the Alpine nation, but to roll it out across the European Union – where plastic straws have been banned as single-use plastic products since July 2021.
Weening has already announced his intention to obtain an exemption for Capri-Sun in Brussels, but it remains uncertain whether his arguments will hold any suction up against the EU-wide ban.
