Recycling plant in UK to transform old car bumpers into high-quality plastics

Recycling specialist MBA Polymers UK (Worksop; www.mbapolymers.co.uk) said it is set to create a high-quality plastic sourced from end-of-life (ELV) car bumpers, a move which would help car manufacturers achieve a target of at least 25% of plastics in a car being made from post-consumer plastics.

A new production line at the group’s Wimblington plant, near Cambridge, is set to be supplied with material from MBA Polymers’ collection sites, and access feedstock from the UK’s biggest ELV recycler, EMR (Warrington; www.uk.emrgroup.com).
MBA Polymers said the move would “significantly reduce the more than 900,000 t of plastics from cars which currently goes to landfill or incineration in the UK and EU each year”.

It would also help manufacturers achieve amendments to the EU’s ELV Directive, which stipulates that at least a quarter of all the plastics used in a newly manufactured car be sourced from recycled material.
Paul Mayhew, MBA Polymers UK’s general manager, said with the automotive industry facing the challenge of meeting recycling targets mandated by the upcoming revision to the EU’s ELV Directive, sourcing truly sustainable recycled plastics is becoming more important than ever.
“Plastics make up around 12% of a car’s weight and this latest development highlights how [we] will enable the automotive industry to create truly circular supply chains on the path to net zero,” he added.
