Cap collaboration with Plastic Bank yields formulation with ocean-bound plastics
US specialist for surface coatings, additives, and compounds Avient (Avon Lake, Ohio; www.avient.com) said it is collaborating with Canadian social recycling enterprise Plastic Bank (Vancouver, British Columbia; www.plasticsbank.com) in the development of a material formulation for luxury caps and closures containing recycled content as high as 98%.

Avient said the new grade is part of its Gravi-Tech REC line of density-modified recycled formulations portfolio. The company’s Gravi-Tech REC GT5200-5089 C I natural is based up to 60% on Plastic Bank’s Social Plastic polymers sourced from ocean-bound plastics waste. The new grade also incorporates recycled fillers, raising the total recycled content to as high as 98%.

The company added that the grade offers greater design flexibility and more efficient processing compared with metals traditionally used in luxury packaging caps and closures.
The high recycled content reduces the carbon footprint of products made with the material by 70% compared with a technically similar virgin grade, it added.
