Construction begins on pyrolysis demo plant in Italy
After announcing plans to build a demonstration facility for pyrolysis in Mantua, Italy at the beginning of 2020, Italian plastics producer Versalis (Milan; www.versalis.eni.com) said it has broken ground for the plant.

CEO Adriano Alfani said the plant is to chemically recycle mixed plastic waste at a rate of 6,000 t/y. The facility is scheduled to go on stream at the end of 2024.

Versalis said it developed the proprietary Hoop technology together with compatriot engineering firm Servizi di Ricerche e Sviluppo (Rome; http://www.srs.it). Plastic waste is to be supplied by Corepla (Milan; www.corepla.it), the national consortium for the collection, recycling, and reuse of plastic packaging from household waste.
Reving up reclaim activity
Versalis recently signed a cooperation agreement with French engineering and technology company Technip (Paris; www.technipenergies.com) for the supply of its purification technologies for oil in crackers.

Considering the project’s rate of progress so far, it could be some time before a commercial plant is actually started up, which Alfani said he expects to lead to “influence on the realisation of the recycling targets at national level laid down by the European Commission”.
