Recycling activities unite under new brand / Future growth regions include Middle East, Asia

Austrian packaging manufacturer Alpla (Hard; www.alpla.com) said it has grouped its reclaim activities under the name Alplarecycling.

The group has been investing in its own mechanical recycling operations since 2005 and now operates 13 plants worldwide, four of which are joint ventures with regional partners. Including the recently announced construction of a new plant in South Africa and an expansion in Poland, the company said it has capacities of currently 266,000 t/y for rPET and around 84,000 t/y for HDPE recyclate.

Around 1,100 of the 23,300 employees at Alpla are now said to be involved with recycling. The growing importance of the division, its expansion, and increasing demand are reportedly led to the establishment of the new brand.

In the coming years, the company said it intends to push recycling commitments in areas including southern Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region. “Interest in sustainable packaging is increasing worldwide,” said recycling MD Dietmar Marin.

Alpla currently processes 20% of material from household collections and intends to increase this to at least 25% by 2025.
