Swedish research and development company PulPac (Västra Frölunda; www.pulpac.com) and Greece’s Matrix Pack (Athens; www.matrixpack.gr/en) have agreed that the latter, a maker of paper drinking straws, will use the PulPac’s dry-moulded fibre process for a range of products starting with lids for takeaway beverages.

The Swedish company uses thermoforming to manufacture packaging and single-use products made of pulp and cellulose.

“We will begin with the production of paper lids for hot and cold drinks and then expand the product range,” a Matrix spokesperson told Plasteurope.com. No details were given about the planned output volume.

Founded in 2009, Matrix employs nearly 700 and most recently reported turnover of EUR 50 mn from its eight production facilities around the world, which include two in the US, four in Greece, and one each in the UK and Bulgaria.

The Swedish company’s technology “makes it possible to produced fibre-based packaging almost without water,” a PulPac spokesperson told PIE. The company, founded in 2018, currently has around 100 employees. Turnover last year was reported at SEK 36.3 mn (EUR 3.1 mn). The company plans to build a local presence in the US in the “near future”.
