Swedish packaging giant Emballator Group (Jönköping; www.emballator.com) has boosted its packaging reach across Northern Europe after acquiring Finnish packaging specialist Europak (Espoo; www.europak.fi) for an undisclosed sum.
Founded in 1980, family-run Europak manufactures a variety of HDPE packaging products, from 0.4 l to 220 l, and blow moulded technical parts including bottles, barrels, and canisters, for sectors ranging from the chemical industry to food manufacturers, as well as recycled polyethylene materials. Under its GreenLine trademark the company manufactures recycled plastic canisters and bottles with 30% to 100% rHDPE content – depending on the existing legislation.
Emballator bought the company, which reports annual turnover of around EUR 8 mn, from its owners, Finnish investment company Korpi Capital, and the firm’s managing director, Harri Laaksonen.
Kent Viitanen, Emballator Group’s chief executive, said the Europak deal would strengthen his firm’s position in Finland and the Baltic states. Viitanen added that the Finnish company would work closely with Emballator’s Mellerud unit, which manufactures standard or bespoke plastic bottles and plastic cans for chemical engineering products, pharmaceuticals, and food.

Europak currently employs 18 people and following the deal’s completion, expected at the beginning of September this year, its management and what it called “key personnel” are to stay with the firm.
The Emballator Group, with 900 staff and an annual turnover of SEK 2.5 bn (EUR 218 mn), comprises three business groups: Emballator Metal Group, Emballator Packaging Innovations, and Emballator Packaging UK. These operate out of nine facilities in Sweden, Finland, and the UK.
The group was established through a series of deals dating back to 1975, which were put together by Herenco, a Jönköping-based family-run holding company founded in 1865. Besides Emballator, Herenco owns Herenco Invest, which invests in and owns companies active in ventilation, sun protection, and flooring.
