Start of construction for PE swing plant in Zhanjiang
German chemicals giant BASF’s (Ludwigshafen; www.basf.com) integrated “Verbund” production at its Chinese site in Zhanjiang is being expanded. In June, the company started the construction of a polyethylene production plant with a capacity of 500,000 t/y, which is primarily to serve the domestic market; commissioning is scheduled for 2025.
In response to a Plasteurope.com query, a BASF Asia spokesperson specified that the site would house an HDPE/LLD swing plant.

BASF had started up its maiden productions at the Verbund site – compounding lines for polyamides and PBT – in autumn 2022. The central naphtha cracker is scheduled to start operations in 2026.
In total, BASF plans to invest over EUR 10 bn in the various Chinese plants.
