Danish group works with UK supermarket giant Tesco to boost retailer's tray-to-tray recycling initiative
Danish packaging group Faerch (Holstebro; www.faerch.com) has teamed up with UK supermarket chain Tesco (Welwyn Garden City; www.tesco.com) to help the retailer convert recycled PET food trays – collected via European kerbside waste – back into packaging trays for its range of core chilled ready meals.
Tesco said its ready meal trays already contained up to 75% recycled content, predominantly from cleaner and easier to recycle bottle flake PET. Through Faerch’s Tray 2 Tray programme, which was set up in 2021, a minimum of 30% recycled tray content will be included in the new core chilled ready meals trays.

A phased rollout of the new trays across Tesco’s core own brand chilled ready meals was already underway, the group said, and would be completed by the end of the summer.
Tesco also works alongside suppliers to drive change across products – eliminating all hard-to-recycle material from UK packaging – and supports industry action including the UK Plastics Pact. The retailer has said all its packaging will be fully recyclable by 2025.
