Developed by PLA specialist TotalEnergies Corbion (Gorinchem, the Netherlands; www.totalenergies-corbion.com) and US biodegradable polymer supplier Danimer Scientific (Bainbridge, Georgia; www.danimerscientific.com), the material contains a blend of both group’s products and has passed a series of biodegradability tests.

Danimer reckons that across Europe, the equivalent of 249 mn kg of plastics are used in the manufacture of single-use coffee pods annually.

Scott Tuten, Danimer’s chief marketing and sustainability officer, said, “We support the EU’s proposed new regulations as a necessary first step in addressing the problem of plastics waste, and we’re pleased to be offering our compostable coffee pod biopolymer as one example of how the technology behind bioplastics has evolved to serve the needs of manufacturers, regulators, and consumers.”
