Local approval to build UK chemical recycling plant / Completion expected in 2025
Norwegian recycling company Quantafuel (Oslo; www.quantafuel.com) said it is making progress with plans for chemically recycling plastics waste in the UK city of Sunderland, which is just south of Newcastle on the northeast coast of England.
City officials have given the green light for a plant to be run by subsidiary Quantafuel Sunderland, said Lars Rosenløv, CEO of the parent company, who noted that he wants to build more plants of this type in Great Britain.

Construction is set to begin later this year, with completion scheduled for 2025. Quantafuel said it wants to create 100 jobs with the Plastic-to-Liquid (PtL) plant. Waste that cannot be further recycled, which would otherwise either be landfilled or incinerated, is to be broken down into its components and then turned back into plastics. Quantafuel cited input capacity at 100,000 t/y.
The Norwegian company, German chemical giant BASF (Ludwigshafen; www.basf.com), and Dubal Holding are also planning to build a plant for chemically recycling plastics waste in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
