Together with joint venture partners Ecohelp (Targu Mures, Romania) and United Polymer Trading (UPT, Kreuzlingen, Switzerland; www.uptag.ch), Austrian packaging manufacturer Alpla (Hard; www.alpla.com) has opened its first PET recycling plant in Romania.

The plant in Targu Mures, built at a cost of around EUR 7.5 mn on land adjacent to Ecohelp’s existing site, has an output capacity of around 18,000 t/y of recycled bottle-to-bottle material from post-consumer collections.

Initially equipped with one extrusion line, the Targu Mures PET Recycling Team joint venture will in the future supply Southeastern Europe with food-grade rPET, said Georg Lässer, director of business development, procurement, and sales recycling at Alpla.

An expansion has already been planned – the plant offers space for a second extrusion line, which could double capacity. In total, Alpla and its partners have a worldwide production capacity of around 203,000 t/y of rPET and 74,000 t/y of rHDPE.

Last year, the Austrian packaging and recycling specialist achieved record sales of EUR 5.1 bn. The group plans to double recyclate production by 2026 (see Plasteurope.com of 25.01.2023).

Alpla said it also expanded activities in Africa last year. A second production facility was opened in Viana, Angola, a 4,000 m² plant for PET preforms for the beverage industry. Since 2018, Alpla has been represented in Angola with an in-house production plant for beverage packaging manufacturer Refriango. After Refriango was appointed as the official bottler in Angola as Coca-Cola’s partner company, Alpla’s second plant followed in the summer.
