Latvian reclaim firm Nordic Plast (Olaine; www.nordicplast.lv) said it expects to initially ramp up production of recycled polyethylene and polypropylene by a quarter after splashing out EUR 2.8 mn on a new sorting line.
Owned by domestic environmental and waste management group Eco Baltia (Riga; www.ecobaltiavide.lv), Nordic Plast announced that the first stage of its planned manufacturing increase would raise recyclate output to 15,000 t/y from its current level of 12,000 t/y.

Nordic Plast said, “The new equipment is intended for processing materials of various purity, thus also promoting recycling of more difficult to work with packaging streams which have been lagging behind in the industry thus far.”
Plastic packaging recycling goals in the EU are set to raise the recycling level from the current 22% of the total volume of marketed plastic packaging to 50% by 2025. Latvia recycles not much more than a third of its plastic packaging waste yet.
