Sabic, OQ, Kuwait Petroleum mull cracker project

Together with Saudi petrochemical giant Sabic (Riyadh; www.sabic.com) and Kuwait Petroleum International (Kuwait City; www.q8.com), Oman's state-owned energy company OQ (Sohar; www.oq.com) is considering building another domestic gas cracker.

The cracker, as well as possible downstream polymer units in Duqm in the south of the country, would process "natural gas and other feedstocks" from the OQ8 refinery at the site. Representatives of all three companies signed contracts regarding the project development going forward and feasibility studies. Possible capacity as well as key figures for construction and completion have not been announced.
It would be the second downstream plant of its kind in the country. In the northern city of Sohar, the Oman Petrochemical Industries Company (ORPIC) has been operating a partly naphtha, partly gas-fed cracker with ethylene capacity of 800,000 t/y since 2020.
