Sorting technology specialist Tomra (Asker, Norway; www.tomra.com) said it plans to invest EUR 50 mn to EUR 60 mn in the construction of a sorting plant for post-consumer plastic waste. The plant, with a planned annual capacity of 80,000 t/y, is to be built in an existing factory in Germany. Commissioning is planned for 2025 at the latest.

The output of the new plant is to include more than 10 different polymer fractions, both from flexible and rigid plastics; Tomra intends to sell the output to recyclers. The Norwegian company has already been operating a demonstration plant together with polyolefin group Borealis at waste disposal company Zimmermann in Lahnstein, Germany since 2019 (see Plasteurope.com of 22.01.2021).
