Mysterious circumstances: How did the Lukoil CEO die? (Photo: Lukoil)
Ravil Maganov, who headed Russian oil company Lukoil (Moscow; www.lukoil.com), is dead. His cause of death remains unclear.

The company said in a press release that the 68-year-old died “of a serious illness”, but the Russian state news agency Interfax reported that Maganov fell out of a hospital window.

Russian police are investigating his death as a suicide. However, it was not said why the co-founder of Lukoil was in the hospital and why he may have taken his own life.

The younger brother of the deceased, Nail Maganov, is CEO of Russian energy group Tatneft (Almetyevsk).
Facing off with Putin
One thing is certain: the elder Maganov was one of the few top Russian managers who publicly spoke out against the Ukraine war and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the invasion.

According to media reports, several managers of Russian energy companies have been found dead since the beginning of the year. It is unclear whether the deaths are related. However, those familiar with the Kremlin regime cannot dispute that Putin has for years dealt harshly and often brutally with his critics.
