Film and packaging manufacturer AMB (San Daniele del Friuli, Italy; www.ambpackaging.com) has announced an agreement with compatriot recycling company B. For PET (Campolattaro; www.vpitalia.it/azienda-b-for-pet) for the supply of recyclate.
The Italian reclaim firm, which has a processing capacity of 12,000 t/y, is to transform post-consumer trays into rPET flakes at a facility it recently opened in Campolattaro. The material will subsequently be used by AMB for transparent, food-quality film destined for use in self-service packs that can be produced by on-site thermoforming at various food processors. The Italian plastics convertor has been majority-owned by private equity group Peak Rock Capital since February 2021 (see Plasteurope.com of 16.02.2021).
“By the end of this year, we will together have recycled more than 46 mn trays,” said Paolo Cescutti, AMB’s chief procurement officer. He did not provide details about where the trays are to come from.
One of AMB’s declared goals is to utilise new recycling streams to move nearer to a closed circular economy, and the company said the partnership seeks to ensure the use of “much higher recyclate contents” in AMB products. The film and packaging manufacturer is marketing this tray-to-tray recycling initiative under the name “Tray Revive”.
AMB has around 430 employees at five sites in Europe. The manufacturer, which in 2018 made film from over 60,000 t of plastics – mainly polyethylene and PET, but also polyamide and EVOH – often attracts attention through acquisitions (see Plasteurope.com of 04.10.2021).
