Thai paper, cardboard, and plastic packaging manufacturer SCG Packaging (SCGP, Bangkok; www.scgpackaging.com) has acquired packaging recycler Peute (Dordrecht, the Netherlands; www.peute.nl) for THB 2.87 bn (EUR 78 mn).
The Dutch waste paper and plastics trader, which recently reported turnover of EUR 249 mn, has the capacity to process around 100,000 t/y of plastics in addition to 1 mn t of waste paper. The Plastics & Polymers division, founded in 2012, processes LDPE materials and nonwovens, big bags, PET bottles, and polypropylene and polystyrene waste. Nine sorting lines and two baling presses are available for the same in Dordrecht. According to SCGP, it is currently considering relocating the plastics division to Alblasserdam near the port of Rotterdam in order to expand capacities.
By accessing larger quantities of recovered paper and plastic, SCGP aims to meet the growing global market demand for sustainable packaging made from recycled materials, CEO Wichan Jitpukdee said. Additionally, Peute’s expertise in waste management is expected to help increase SCGP’s recycling efficiency in the ASEAN region.
SCGP’s 56 production facilities are spread across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Spain, and, since last year, the UK after the company acquired foodservice packaging supplier Go-Pak (Bristol; www.go-pakuk.com – see Plasteurope.com of 21.01.2021).
The parent company of the Thai packaging manufacturer – conglomerate Siam Cement (SCG, Bangkok; www.scg.com) – just recently said that it would build a production plant for biaxially oriented PET films (BOPET) in Vietnam that is to start operations in the first half of 2024 (see Plasteurope.com of 30.08.2022).
