Expansion of scheme to curb marine litter / Growth follows success of Indonesian projects

The Stop the Tap on Ocean Plastics (STOP) programme launched in 2017 to curb marine litter in Southeast Asia is covering additional areas following the results of a pilot project in three Indonesian cities.
Co-founded by Austrian resin maker Borealis (Vienna; www.borealisgroup.com) and environmental group Systemiq (London; www.systemiq.earth – see Plasteurope.com of 19.10.2017), STOP designs, implements, and scales circular economy solutions to prevent plastics from polluting waterways in Southeast Asia.
STOP said that by the end of 2021, it has brought more reliable waste management services to over 260,000 people in the cities of Muncar and Pasuruan in East Java, and Jembrana in Bali. The programme cited the construction of five waste-sorting facilities and its contribution to the permanent prevention of more than 20,000 t of waste from leaking into the environment.

The project's STOP Muncar, covering the city of Muncar, was handed over to the local government and its community in February 2022 and then was expanded to cover the entire Banyuwangi Regency in eastern Java.
