PolyREC (www.polyrec.eu), the European initiative to monitor, verify and report plastics recycling and uptake, has launched RecoTrace – said to be the first comprehensive data system to monitor both plastics recycling volumes and recycled plastics use for all main polymers.

The tool, which is compliant with and recognised by the European Commission’s Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA), provides both recyclers and converters with a free-to-use online platform to track progress against individual pledges to produce or use recycled content, helping to demonstrate commitment to a circular economy.

“PolyREC is calling on all plastic recyclers and converters to register their recycled plastic data into RecoTrace and, in doing so, ensure transparency of the circular movement of European polymers,” said Ton Emans, president at Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE, Brussels; www.plasticsrecyclers.eu), on behalf of PolyREC. “Understanding the size and dynamics of the European recycled plastics market will help inform future legislation and investment decisions that accelerate the transition to a circular economy.”

RecoTrace includes the following: polyolefins, PET, PVC, PS, EPS, XPS, PA, ABS and PC.
EuPC’s MORE tool now CPA-compliant
In separate news, industry association European Plastics Converters (EuPC, Brussels; www.plasticsconverters.eu) has announced that its online platform, Monitoring Recyclates for Europe (MORE), is confirmed by the CPA as an official data collector. EuPC said the platform has been “slightly updated” to adapt to the CPA’s requirements (see Plasteurope.com of 08.07.2021). It added that in the future, the MORE website will provide information about CPA audits, including a list of approved CPA auditors.

The MORE system records the volumes of recycled polymers that European converters use in their products – it does not take data from recyclers to monitor plastics recycling volumes (as RecoTrace does).

The platform launched in April 2019 to register the converting industry’s efforts to reach the EU target of 10 mn t/y of recycled polymers being used between 2025 and 2030. Data is collected and published annually; the association expects to release the results from its latest survey over the next few weeks.
