Acquisition of injection moulder Karl Etzel / More business planned with German automotive OEMs
For a sum of USD 95 mn (EUR 84 mn), Canadian automotive components supplier and plastics processor ABC Technologies (Toronto, Ontario; www.abctechnologies.com) is set to acquire German injection moulding company Karl Etzel (Mühlacker; www.karletzel-gmbh.de).

As a result, the North American automotive parts supplier will expand its presence in Europe, which has until now consisted of the two plants in Spain and Poland, and a German sales subsidiary in Rüsselsheim. ABC plans to complete the transaction with the owner and managing director of Etzel, Andreas Schürrle, in the first quarter of 2022.

With a workforce of 300, Karl Etzel primarily manufactures components for car interiors, as well as technically demanding components made of all conventional thermoplastics for the fields of medical technology, electronics, and construction. Its customers include Daimler, Greiner, Johnson Controls, Kärcher, and Lear.

On a production area of 30,000 m² at the company’s Mühlacker headquarters, there are some 130 injection moulding machines in operation with a clamping force range of 150 kN to 20,000 kN, also including multi-component processes. According to the latest available information, Etzel processes between 16,000 t and 20,000 t of plastics a year – some with a glass fibre content of up to 50%. Additionally, the company has a site in Böblingen, Germany, where development activities and project management are located. Sales in the 12 months up to November 2021 are just under EUR 90 mn.

ABC predominantly produces blow-moulded and injection-moulded plastic components for the automotive industry. The company, headed by CEO Todd Sheppelman, employs 6,750 people and posted sales in the 2020/21 financial year (30.6.) of USD 970 mn. In addition to an operating result of USD 35 mn, the company reported a loss of USD 11.6 mn. This means that the loss from the previous year was more than halved.

Only a few days ago, ABC also concluded the acquisition of US plastics processor dlhBowles (Canton, Ohio; www.dlhbowles.com), a specialist in the transport of liquids such as wash water fluids, for which it paid USD 255 mn. For the 2022 financial year, dlhBowles estimates sales of USD 120 mn.
