Packaging and paper maker Mondi (Johannesburg / South Africa; www.mondigroup.com) has unveiled “Advantage StretchWrap”, a new lightweight, elastic, and puncture-resistant paper grade suitable for wrapping pallets for transportation. Developed together with machine manufacturer ACMI (Fornovo Taro / Italy; www.acmispa.it), the grade aims to replace polyethylene stretch films, which is currently the industry standard to secure goods on a pallet – it is made from 100% paper and is sourced from renewable materials in Scandinavia. When used with ACMI’s “Rocket E-500” wrapping system, the paper grade makes the complete shift to a fully recyclable pallet wrapping solution possible.
Mondi said acceleration tests to simulate transportation with ESTL (Deerlijk / Belgium; www.estl.be) equipment and real-life transportation trials confirmed the suitability of the material for this application. The packaging specialist has been producing elastic strong paper for the packaging of spring mattresses for more than 20 years. According to the company, further developments in the parameters of strength, stretchability and lower grammages have now made it possible to think about new areas of application.
