Neste (Espoo / Finland; www.neste.com) and US polyolefin giant LyondellBasell (LYB, Houston, Texas; www.lyondellbasell.com) have announced a long-term commercial agreement under which the American resin maker will source the Finnish company’s “Neste RE” feedstock made from 100% renewable bio-based sources. The companies said the material will be processed into polymers through the cracker at LyondellBasell’s Wesseling / Germany plant and sold under the “CirculenRenew” brand name.

The companies have been working together on making resin from renewable sources since 2019 (see Plasteurope.com of 26.06.2019), and the Neste feedstock is based on waste and residue oils and fats. The US producer said in May that the Wesseling plant has produced virgin quality polymers from raw materials derived from plastics waste, a precursor the company would use for commercial production of polypropylene and polyethylene (see Plasteurope.com of 11.05.2021).

Richard Roudeix, senior VP of olefins and polyolefins for EMEA and India at LyondellBasell, said, “We are very pleased that together with Neste we can bring our customers one step closer to the creation of more sustainable end products. The extended relationship with Neste is an important piece in our multi-pronged approach to deliver on our sustainability goals.”

The US resin maker said earlier this year that luggage producer Samsonite was using a Circulen grade of mechanically reclaimed plastic that includes household waste to manufacture suitcases (see Plasteurope.com of 30.04.2021).
