Nine days – that’s how long the museum of plastics in Madrid is open to public. Why? Because on World Recycling Day this year, 17 May 2021, the very people who put the museum together will be breaking it down to zero – walls, ceilings, floors included.

The Plastic Museum is not just exhibiting plastic items, but has also been made entirely of plastics such as polyethylene, methacrylate, polycarbonate and PVC, and occupies a space of 73.5 m² in Spain’s capital. This unique initiative by EsPlasticos was meant to drive home the message of the usability and importance of plastics in our everyday lives. In its three rooms, the museum has been presented as a transformative space that seeks to change the perception of plastics. It also shows how plastics have transformed sectors such as health, food, construction and mobility.

Luis Artola Moneo, managing director of flexible packaging manufacturer Plastigaur, told Plasteurope.com, “We have one main target: Show that plastic is a necessity for the society, that it has many different applications and that it is a sustainable material that helps reduce footprint. So, the problem is waste management and not the material.”

While the museum has been open for public viewing since 8 May, those who cannot see it in person in Madrid can take a virtual tour of its rooms on the museum’s website. Come Monday, this fantastic plastic creation will be dismantled and recycled to give new shape to the wonderous material called plastic.
