rPET-based PBT resins divert over 100m single-use bottles from landfill / Sustainability benefits said to be verified
Saudi Arabian chemicals and plastics giant Sabic (Riyadh; www.sabic.com) said it has helped to divert more than 100m single-use PET water bottles from landfills and incinerators since launching its “LNP Elcrin iQ” range of PBT resins in 2019 (see Plasteurope.com of 13.06.2019). The resins are made from rPET and are a drop-in replacement for virgin PBT.

Results from a life cycle assessment (LCA), which Sabic said underwent third-party critical review in accordance with ISO 14040/14044 standards on environmental and sustainability management, showed that the resins reduced global warming impact by 29% and cut cumulative energy demand by 43% when compared with virgin PBT. The resins also displayed favourable LCA results compared with data extracted from PlasticsEurope’s (Brussels / Belgium; www.plasticseurope.org) eco-profiles for other virgin base resins, such as PA 6 and PA 6.6, Sabic said.

The Saudi group said it has engaged US certification company SCS Global Services (SCS, Emeryville, California; www.scsglobalservices.com) to independently audit the processes used for its LNP Elcrin iQ resins.

“The manufacturing processes for our LNP Elcrin iQ resins have been audited for adherence to the SCS Recycled Content Standard, and the supply chain has been audited for responsible sourcing, including social, environmental health and safety requirements, enabling customers to quantify the contribution of our materials to their sustainability targets,” said Maureen MacDonald-Stein, director of growth for OEM & markets at Sabic. “Recycled content and the Environmental Claims Validation for responsible sourcing certifications can increase customer confidence in our upcycled resins and underscore the multiple benefits these materials can provide in terms of environmental protection.”

LNP Elcrin IQ resins are available in different grades, including glass- and mineral-reinforced products and non-halogenated, flame-retardant formulations. They can be used in a wide range of applications, including consumer electronic enclosures and components, exterior automotive parts, healthcare and personal care products.
