Domo Chemicals (Leuna / Germany; www.domochemicals.com) has partnered with Italian thermoplastics specialist STS Tecnopolimeri (Ancona; www.ststech.it) to develop a range of parts for household and electronic items made from “Domamid” FR 6G30V0E BK halogen-free flame-retardant polyamide 6.
The German group said growing demand for innovative products and metal replacements, along with increasingly strict fire codes and flammability requirements, have led to the development of special materials for these types of parts. Domo added that makers of smart devices, computers and media equipment are facing challenges of further miniaturisation and long-lasting surface aesthetics in their product development as they strive to meet increasingly sophisticated demands from consumers.
Matteo Pigliapoco, owner of STS Tecnopolimeri, said the recently approved Domamid FR 6G30V0E BK grade has “proven to be the first choice for several of our household and electronic cases such as keyboards, covers, displays and command boxes, developed for the IoT [internet of things] generation.”
As part of the Domamid brand, Domo has also created a PA 6 grade specifically for connectors used in a washing machine made by Miele (Gütersloh / Germany; www.miele.com). This particular grade – Domamid FR 6G25V0E GYR7035 – is stabilised for heat-aging with 25% glass-fibre material and a UL yellow card. UL’s (www.ul.com) plastics recognition programme, also known as “Yellow Card”, is a globally recognised safety and quality guarantee for a polymer’s safety and performance-related properties. Pigliapoco said, “Domamid FR 6G25V0E GYR7035 is a substitute for a halogen-based product and is significantly more environment friendly.”
Maarten Veevaete, director of global R&D at Domo Engineered Materials, said, “Halogenated solutions usually have better glow-wire performances compared to halogen and red phosphorus-free materials, but with our grade we were able to meet the necessary customer specifications.” He added that an additional benefit is the grade’s lower density that also reduces the weight of the final part, allowing for significant cost savings.

New JV to distribute Domo’s PA grades in Italy
In separate news, Italian distributors Leonardi (Camerano; www.leonardi.it) and Guberti (San Vendemiano; www.guberti.it) have created a joint venture called GL Solutions (Camerano) that will market Domo’s Domamid, “Econamid” and “Technyl” PA 6 and PA 6.6 brands in Italy. GL Solutions has a warehouse in Conegliano, and said it will shortly extend its logistics presence in Bologna, Turin and the Brescia/Bergamo area.
The company joins existing Domo distributor Ultrapolymers, which sells Technyl resins across Europe, excluding Serbia and Russia (see Plasteurope.com of 05.05.2020).
