PVC resins made from mixed plastics waste / Sabic supplies ethylene produced with pyrolysis
PVC manufacturer Vynova (Tessenderlo / Belgium; www.vynova-group.com) has launched what it claims to be the world’s first range of “circular-attributed” PVC resins, which are manufactured with ethylene produced from mixed plastics waste. The PVC will be marketed under the company’s “VynoEcoSolutions” portfolio of circular and renewable products.

The ethylene for the materials is made through pyrolysis, a chemical process in which the plastics waste is heated without oxygen to break it down into components that can be turned into chemical feedstocks such as ethylene. This approach replaces conventional fossil feedstocks, reduces carbon emissions by 50%, and contributes to sustainable management of difficult-to-recycle plastic-waste streams, the company noted.

The ethylene is supplied by Saudi petrochemicals giant Sabic (Riyad; www.sabic.com) via its Dutch production facilities in Geleen. The PVC grades, which are certified under the ISCC Plus sustainability system, are to be made initially at Vynova’s sites in Beek / The Netherlands and Mazingarbe / France.

Vynova has also developed a line of what it calls “bio-attributed” PVC resins, which are manufactured witih ethylene from certified second-generation biomass outside the food chain.
