RECYCLASS
Publication of methodology for assessing packaging recyclability
RecyClass (Brussels / Belgium; www.recyclass.eu), a cross-industry initiative developed by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE, Brussels; www.plasticsrecyclers.eu), has published a methodology for assessing the recyclability of plastic packaging. The methodology aims to harmonise design-for-recycling claims by various parties in the value chain. It is based on the data compiled under RecyClass’ “Design for Recycling Guidelines” and recyclability protocols (see Plasteurope.com of 07.06.2018) and comprises two separate assessments.

The first is a “Design-for-Recycling” certification that qualitatively assesses packaging based on the RecyClass online tool. The analysis will classify packaging with a score from A to F, where A represents full recyclability through to F for no recyclability. The second assessment, ”Recyclability Rate Certification”, relies on a quantitative verification of the packaging recyclability, using a specific formula developed by RecyClass in line with European standards.
The certifications are performed by recognised bodies and independent auditors. RecyClass announced last month that Plastship (Waldems / Germany; www.plastship.com), Recoup (Peterborough / UK; www.recoup.org) and Suez.Circpack (Paris / France; www.suez.com) were interested in being certification bodies.
RecyClass chairman Paolo Glerean said, “With these certifications we are aiming at delivering a transparent and coherent approach to recyclability of plastic packaging, coming a step closer to a common industry understanding.” Gian de Belder, chairman of the RecyClass advisory board and packaging technologist at P&G (Cincinnati, Ohio / USA; www.us.pg.com), added that the methodology will help build confidence across the value chain, including brand owners and, eventually, consumers.
