Coronavirus prompts Detroit motor show to be cancelled / Show space repurposed as temporary hospital
The 2020 “North American International Auto Show” organised by NAIAS (Troy, Michigan / USA; www.naias.com) is cancelled in light of the global sweep of the coronavirus pandemic. Show organisers said the TCF Center in Detroit, site of the cancelled show, is being repurposed as a temporary field hospital by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA, part of the US Department of Homeland Security, is created to coordinate a response to a disaster in the US that overwhelms local and state resources.

The “New York International Auto Show” (NYIAS; www.autoshowny.com) organised by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (Whitestone, New York / USA; www.gnyada.com) was rescheduled from early April to 28 August to 6 September 2020 due to ongoing health concerns stemming from the spread of Covid-19. FEMA also converted the Jacob Javits Convention Center, where the NYIAS will be held in New York City, into a temporary field hospital. The pandemic has moved major automotive companies to suspended car production – see Plasteurope.com of 20.03.2020. Numerous automotive events have been cancelled or postponed in Europe too, including the cancellation of the “Geneva International Motor Show” (www.gims.swiss) originally set for 5-15 March 2020, while Germany’s international motor show “IAA” (www.iaa.de) will be taking place in 2021 in Munich / Germany – see Plasteurope.com of 02.03.2020 and 10.03.2020.
