Environmental organisation Waste Free Oceans (WFO, Brussels / Belgium; www.wastefreeoceans.org) has announced several partnerships on new products containing plastics recycled from marine litter.

Family-owned Fapil (Malveira / Portugal; www.fapil.pt), a maker of household, hygiene and organisational storage products for domestic and professional purposes, launched its “Ocean” line of household products, containing at least 20% plastics derived from recycled fishing gear. The items in the new range contain plastics recycled from non-marine waste as well as a “small percentage” of virgin plastics. There are currently 35 products in the Ocean line, including mops, brooms, brushes, buckets, storage boxes, clothes airers and similar objects.

Plastic packaging and technical parts producer Jokey (Wipperfürth / Germany; www.jokey.com) announced that its “Eco Concept” of incorporating recyclate into packaging is being used in the production of containers and lids for Jonas Farbenwerke (Wülfrath / Germany; www.jonas-farbenwerke.de), a maker of interior paints, adhesives and primers. The packaging contains 20% ocean plastics, more than 50% post-consumer recyclate and is fully recyclable. Combining environmentally friendly paint with packaging containing recycled plastics meets aims by both companies to supply products that minimise their ecological footprint, achieve sustainability along the value chain and contribute to a circular economy.

In other news, Søren Gade, Denmark’s MEP, was appointed as the new champion of the WFO foundation. Gade succeeds French MEP Alain Cadec and is vice-chair of the European Parliament’s “fisheries” committee (PECH), which is involved in sustainability aspects of fishing in Europe. WFO also announced it is partnering and collaborating in India on products made from recycled ocean plastics.
