Bottling equipment producer KHS (Dortmund / Germany; www.khs.com) has developed a recyclable juice bottle made of 100% rPET called “Beyond Juice”. The bottle is also available as a film-free pack due to the KHS “Nature MultiPack” packaging system, which holds the bottles together through dots of removable adhesive.

KHS’ “FreshSafe PET” technology enables the bottle to keep beverages up to ten times longer than those filled into uncoated bottles, claims the company. A thin layer of glass is applied to the inside of the bottle to prevent oxygen from penetrating into it and CO₂ from escaping out of it. FreshSafe PET is also deployed in making KHS’ new wide-neck PET containers for hot food. Like Beyond Juice, the containers were presented at “K 2019” in Düsseldorf / Germany.

Light in weight and with good recycling properties, the containers are a sustainable alternative to non-returnable glass receptacles, says the company. This line-compatible type of packaging can be produced on the KHS “InnoPET Blomax Series V” stretch blow moulding machine in what is known as the blow-trim process or from preforms with a moulded neck which can be crystallined as required. By heating the blow moulds electrically, the containers can also accommodate food with standard market filling temperatures. The PET alternative can withstand the positive and negative pressures which can occur in the closed container following the filling process.
