Despite its difficulties – see Plasteurope.com of 15.08.2019 – automotive parts supplier Leoni (Nuremberg / Germany; www.leoni.com) is to invest in the expansion of its cable production facility in Cuauhtémoc / Mexico. The intention is, from 2020, to also manufacture electric vehicle (EV) charging cables and high-voltage cables there for the internal wiring of EVs.
On 14 August 2019, the foundation stone was laid for the 7,000 m² extension, which is expected to cost EUR 22m. This will increase the plant’s production area to nearly 30,000 m². The company plans to create 100 new jobs, raising the workforce to 890.
Leoni says the reason for the extension are US car manufacturers’ plans to increase production of electric vehicles. It expects electric cars to have a market share in North America of more than 15% by 2025.
The site in Cuauhtémoc is part of the Wire & Cable Solutions (WCS) division, which, according to the latest information, will next year either be sold or floated on the stock market as an individual company.
