As mentioned at Petcore Europe’s (Brussels / Belgium; https://petcore-europe.org) annual conference in February – see Plasteurope.com of 14.02.2019 – the industry association that represents the European PET value chain has launched a special industry group for chemical recycling named “PET Monomer Recycling” (www.petmonomerrecycling.org). Petcore says it created the group to establish a strong value chain in developing the chemical recycling of PET waste and to interact with legislators, regulators, NGOs and stakeholders, ensuring health and safety aspects as well as product acceptance are achieved
“PET Monomer Recycling has the potential to increase the quantity of available recycled PET and complement the existing mechanical recycling capacities,” says Indorama’s Wim Hoenderdaal, chairman of the new group. Petcore notes that PET trays already use on average a recycled content of 50%, and for PET drink bottles, there are cases where the recyclate content is well above 50% and even at 100%.
