Next large polypropylene line planned / New refinery with downstream capacities in southeast India

India's PP expansions are advancing again. Chennai Petroleum (CPCL, Chennai, Tamil Nadu / India; www.cpcl.co.in), which is a subsidiary of Indian Oil (IOCL, New Delhi; www.iocl.com), will set up a PP line at its site in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, in the southeastern part of the country.
The company is planning to expand capacity output at its refinery from 1m t/y to 9m t/y. Propylene will come from the refinery's fluid catalytic cracker (FCC), which will be converted to PP.
The facility is designed to have a capacity of 475,000 t/y. It will be built to have "Novolen" technology licensed by McDermott (Houston, Texas / USA; www.mcdermott.com), like IOCL's planned lines at other locations – see Plasteurope.com of 07.01.2019. Production is scheduled to start in 2024.
According to Plasteurope.com's Polyglobe database (www.polyglobe.net), IOCL will rise to become a top 10 Asian PP producer. India's total PP capacity is now set to approach the 9m t/y mark in the coming five years.
