SM-purchasing firms suspected of violating EU antitrust rules / European Commission confirms unannounced inspections in several countries
On 5 June 2018, EU and relevant national competition officials raided the offices of styrene monomer purchasers in several countries on suspicion of antitrust violations. The European Commission did not name the affected companies.
That being said, polymer dispersions and synthetic latex specialist Synthomer (London / UK; www.synthomer.com) admitted in a statement on 8 June that the unannounced EU inspections had included its London offices. The company, which generated sales of GBP 1.5 bn (EUR 1.7 bn) last year, has announced it will fully cooperate with the investigation.
Unannounced inspections are a preliminary step in investigations, says the European Commission. "The fact that the commission carries out such inspections does not mean that the companies are guilty of anti-competitive behaviour nor does it prejudge the outcome of the investigation itself."
