PEEK production optimised at plant in China
Speciality chemicals group Evonik (Essen / Germany; www.evonik.com) has optimised the production process of its polyether ether ketone (PEEK) product “Vestakeep” at its site in Changchun, Jilin / China and brought about further improvements in the quality of its product. Evonik said it is positioning itself as a “reliable partner” on the global PEEK market for the long term.

As a result of the optimisation measures undertaken at its plant, energy requirements, material use, and waste generated during production were reduced in particular, Evonik said. It was also simultaneously possible to boost the productivity of the PEEK plant. The company said it is thus setting new technical standards in environmental protection and safety in PEEK production.

On the product side, the production process has resulted in improvements in quality, such as better colour characteristics. “Our business with Vestakeep high-performance polymers has been showing strong and sustained growth over several years, for example in the automotive, aviation, oil and gas industries or the medical sector,” said Ralf Düssel, head of the High Performance Polymers Business Line.

Evonik’s plant in Changchun is a joint venture with Jilin University (Changchun; http://global.jlu.edu.cn). The German group owns an 85% stake in Jida Evonik High Performance Polymers (Changchun). Its output was last lifted in 2015 to meet growing demand for the material. According to Plasteurope.com's Polyglobe database (www.polyglobe.net), its capacity is 1,500 t/y. Evonik separately has a joint venture with Daicel (Osaka / Japan; www.daicel.com) on a PEEK manufacturing plant in Japan, with capacity at 300 t/y – see Plasteurope.com of 04.11.2015.

Thanks to their high heat and chemical resistance, Vestakeep speciality polymers can replace metal components to allow, for example, sophisticated applications in lightweight construction. Evonik said last year it has also developed Vestakeep powders that are suitable for tribological coatings for reducing friction and wear of moving components.
