Waste Free Oceans (WFO, Brussels / Belgium; www.wastefreeoceans.org) is a non-profit organisation that works with fishermen, plastics converters, plastics recyclers and businesses that create products from ocean plastic. Founded in 2011, the organisation's mission is to remove and reuse marine litter. To date, ten European countries have participated in Waste Free Oceans' "fishing for litter": Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, Denmark, Austria, Hungary, Portugal and France. In addition to its work in Europe, Waste Free Oceans operates projects in Turkey, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
Litter-fishing is organised with fishermen, whose boats are equipped with a special trawl net that can collect 6 to 8 t of floating plastic waste per journey, and funded by partner companies or processors. In 2014, one such collaboration with Portuguese processor Logoplaste (Cascais; www.logoplaste.com) and Belgian ecological detergent manufacturer Ecover (Malle; www.ecover.com) created the "Ocean Bottle", made with ocean plastic content. The Ocean Bottle won a 2014 "Red Dot" communication design award.
Waste Free Oceans has partnerships that encompass plastics in general, extending beyond the issue of marine plastics, such as with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF, Washington, D.C. / USA; www.worldwildlife.org), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, Nairobi / Kenya; www.unep.org) and the Diplomatic Council (The Hague / The Netherlands; www.diplomatic-council.org).
