Sonoco (Hartsville, South Carolina; www.sonoco.com) on 31 October completed its acquisition of composite cans, drums and rigid plastic containers producer Weidenhammer Packaging Group (Hockenheim / Germany; www.weidenhammer.de) – for previous coverage, see Plasteurope.com of 26.08.2014. The EUR 286m cash deal was financed by a USD 600m credit facility the US diversified packaging producer entered into earlier in the month.
The purchase is expected to boost Sonoco’s global consumer-related packaging and services business, lifting sales to USD 2.8 bn, and will also increase the company’s sales in Europe to about 21% of total group sales.
