BASF (Ludwigshafen / Germany; www.basf.com) and Sinopec (Beijing / China; www.sinopec.com) plan to extend their joint venture operations in Nanjing / China by expanding EO production and building a new plant for neopentylglycol (NPG). The JV, BASF-YPC, is also expanding its acrylics complex by adding acrylic acid and butyl acrylate plants. Production is expected to begin in 2014.

Albert Heuser, a BASF president, said the projects “underline our confidence in the development of the Asia Pacific and China markets”. BASF-YPC is also building a 60,000 t/y superabsorbent polymers (SAP) plant which is also expected to begin production in 2014.

The partners have not disclosed the size or expected cost of the planned EO, NPG or acrylics projects. BASF-YPC’s current EO capacity is 330,000 t/y.
