Eight months after the regulatory authorities approved the creation of Reverdia (Delft / The Netherlands; www.reverdia.com) – see Plasteurope.com of 04.04.2012 – the DSM (Sittard / The Netherlands; www.dsm.com) and Roquette Frères (Lestrem / France; www.roquette.com) joint venture has begun commercial production of its “Biosuccinium” sustainable succinic acid. The company said its 10,000 t/y plant, located in Cassano Spinola / Italy, is the world’s first large-scale facility turning out succinic acid from renewable sources.
“The next phase will enable direct and indirect customers to start production of commercial scale volumes of materials and end products based on bio-based succinic acid,” said Reverdia general manager Will van den Tweel. Key “Biosuccinium” applications include polybutylene succinate (PBS), polyester polyols, coating and composite resins, phthalate-free plastiisers as well as 1.4 butanediol, used – among others – in footwear and packaging.
