NPE 2012 finds more resonance than 2009 show / Polymer producers in greater numbers

Interest in this year’s “NPE”, the mammoth US plastics exhibition to be held from 1-5 April 2012 – for the first time in Orlando, Florida – is “substantially stronger” than in recession year 2009, says the organiser Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI, Washington DC / USA; www.plasticsindustry.org). At the beginning of March, some 1,830 exhibitor companies had purchased nearly 84,000 m² of space. In 2009 it was decided to move the show from its traditional base in Chicago to sunny Florida – see Plasteurope.com of 24.11.2009.
Registrations for NPE 2012 are already running 8% ahead of this time in 2006 and 10% ahead of 2009, with “more commitments expected by opening day,” said Gene Sanders, senior vice president of trade shows and conferences at SPI. Total registration this year is expected to top 50,000. International participation “promises to be greater than ever,” said Sanders. Some 26% of registrations so far are from abroad – compared with 16% in 2006 and 18% in 2009.
NPE visitors will also stay longer than in 2009, if the number of hotel reservations is any indication. Some 32,000 rooms were utilised in Chicago three years ago, the association’s figures show. In Orlando, which is close to many tourist attractions including Disney World, Universal Studios and the new Harry Potter theme park, some 50,000 hotel nights have so far been booked over the five days of the fair – 56% more than for the last event in Chicago.
Not only the number of visitors and exhibitors expected to attend the upcoming plastics extravaganza are superlative. According to Sanders, participating companies’ booths will be larger, and more equipment will be on display. The 32 largest exhibitors plan to bring with them 20% more equipment, with the total “to exceed the weight of 200 Boeing 747 jetliners.” Another change this year is the increase in the number of resins producers exhibiting at the fair, which the organiser said will be “more than we have seen in the last four or five NPEs.”
