Brazilian subsidiary launches bioplastic caps for milk / Bioplastics partnership with Braskem and Tetra Pak
Starting August 2011, Nestl Brazil (www.nestle.com.br) the local subsidiary of Swiss consumer goods manufacturer Nestl (Vevey; www.nestle.com) will seal its local Ninho and Molico milk containers with bioplastic caps made of sugar-cane derived plastic. The green shift is part of a partnership between Nestl Brazil, Tetra Pak (Lund / Sweden; www.tetrapak.com) and Braskem (So Paulo / Brazil; www.braskem.com.br). Whereas Tetra Pak supplies the milk cartons aseptic packaging, Braskem likely supplies the necessary biopolymers.

The shift is part of Nestls efforts to introduce bioplastics in its global product packaging portfolio. Earlier this year, the group had entered into a collaboration with Australias Cardia Bioplastics (Melbourne; www.cardiabioplastics.com) to reduce the environmental impact of packaging see Plasteurope.com of 05.01.2011 and Nestl says it is engaged in 30 similar projects worldwide. The Brazilian market for bioplastics is forecast to reach USD 618m in 2015, a 2010 study by Frost & Sullivan (London / UK; www.chemical.frost.com) found see Plasteurope.com of 15.06.2010.
