Commissioning of maleic capacity expansion in Germany delayed by force majeure
Previously planned for Q1 2011, the 50:50 joint venture Sasol-Huntsman Germany (www.sasol-huntsman-germany.de) has delayed indefinitely the commissioning of its second maleic acid anhydride reactor at its site in Moers / Germany. A company spokesperson said the delay was caused by technical problems, which prompted the company to declare force majeure for the ortho resin feedstock a few days ago.

The plant in Moers has a nameplate capacity of 60,000 t/y. The capacity expansion, which was originally scheduled to come on stream in 2009, is to raise that to 105,000 t/y.

Reports indicate that the additional capacities would bring Huntsman’s global MSA capacity to 205,000 t/y – counting the output of the reactor in Geismar, Louisiana / USA, which was commissioned in mid-2009. The company’s other US operation in Pensacola, Florida, has capacity to churn out 110,000 t/y.
