“2011 JEC Composites Show” in Paris / 14 companies to receive innovation prize
Without an Icelandic volvano spewing ash across the European continent, this year’s “JEC Composites Show” (www.jeccomposites.com), held in Paris / France from 29-21 March, could well see even more visitors than last year’s 27,000 – see Plasteurope.com of 26.04.2010. For three days, international exhibitors will showcase their latest composite innovations on an area of more than 46,000 m2.

Organiser Journal Européen de Composites (JEC, Paris / France; www.jeccomposites.com) will hold its second “Innovative International Composites Summit” at the event. Following the success of last year’s summit, held during JEC’s Asia fair in Singapore, this year four new foci were introduced: nanomaterials, non-destructive material testing, the global carbon fibre market and the future economic growth of the composites industry. Altogether, some 100 industry representatives will lecture during the summit.

In preparation for the show, JEC Composites in January announced the winners of its annual JEC Innovation Awards (for last year’s selection, see Plasteurope.com of 18.02.2010). The awards will be presented at the show in Paris. Commenting on the prizes, JEC president Frédérique Mutel said: “Innovation is strong in four sectors. First, in environmental-friendly fully recyclable materials. Then in advanced mould tooling. The third sector is civil engineering with a large number of new infrastructures especially in Asia or South America. Finally in automotive, with the increasing use of composites due to the need for lightness in new cars to compensate for the increased weight of electronic equipment or batteries.” The main trends therefore were the increased use of eco-solutions, new integrated composites aerostructures as well as the increased automation of processes.

All in all, 14 companies from across different industry spectrums are to receive the JEC Innovation Award. They include Sigmatex (Runcorn, Cheshire / UK; www.sigmatex.com), which was honoured for its new weaving method to create 3D woven generic nodal structures; France’s Latécoère (Toulouse; www.latecoere.fr) for its innovative aircraft structure with advanced stitched preforms, created using an RTM process; as well as 3B Fibreglass (Brussels / Belgium; www.3b-fibreglass.com), whose ventilated façade for the new Sheraton Hotel at Milan airport also vowed the judges.
