Bayer MaterialScience (BMS, Leverkusen / Germany; www.bayerbms.com) is building a new EUR 5m research and development centre for isocyanates process research at Dormagen / Germany. A bench-scale hydration facility will open in autumn of this year.
The centre, which will group all isocyanates research activities together at one site will enhance efficiency and help expand the company’s technology leadership, said polyurethanes business unit head Peter Vanacker. The centre’s work will be focused on improving process steps in the production of MDI and TDI used to make flexible polyurethane foam. Dormagen is a major PU production site for BMS. It is also to be the location of the EUR 150m, 300,000 t/y gas-phase TDI plant scheduled to start up in April 2014 – see Plasteurope.com of 03.03.2010.
