BIFFA
New mixed waste plastics recycling plant to start up in UK
The mixed waste plastics recycling plant being developed by Biffa (Birmingham / UK; www.biffa.co.uk) at the Wilton Industrial Complex on Teesside / UK is expected to be on stream by the end of March 2011. The 25,000 t/y facility was initiated by Greenstar WES Group (Redcar / UK; www.thewesgroup.co.uk) – see Plasteurope.com of 05.02.2010 – prior to its merger with Biffa, which resulted in the formation of a new division for the waste management specialist, Biffa Polymers. Most of the sorting equipment at the new plant already is installed and commercialisation is expected in early March, with a formal opening at the end of March or early April.
The mixed waste plant has received funding to the tune of GBP 1.19m (EUR 1.4m) from the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP, Banbury / UK; www.wrap.org.uk). The facility is located on the same site as the plastic bottle recycling plant established by Greenstar, which primarily supplies rHDPE to Nampak Plastics (Newport Pagnell / UK; www.eu.nampak.com/plastics) for incorporation into milk bottles (see Plasteurope.com of 13.10.2010).
